I *did* search the web with a search engine, before asking.
Clearly (and unsurprisingly, since you are surely more expert than me
about LaTeX), your search was more successful than mine!   ;-)

I've just tried out the cm-super package, and it really seems to be the
right choice: recompiling my test file with pdflatex (after purging
scalable-cyrfonts-tex, upgrading texlive-* packages, and installing
cm-super) produced a PDF file with beautiful vector (Type 1) fonts!
