jadetex from Debian unstable and call back if that solves your

Ah, installing the version of jadetex from testing fixes the problem. Thanks: I hadn't noticed it was different because the version numbers were exactly the same apart from the Debian specific point increase.

(it's a mixed stable / testing / unstable install, so occasional
weirdness is expected.)

Weird systems are unsupported.

True, except version mismatch induced package failure ought to be reflected in the dpkg depends, otherwise upgrades may fail if the packages are upgraded in the wrong order shouldn't they?
