And indeed, looking into the log I see:
Running updmap-sys. This may take some time... done.
Running mktexlsr ... done.

which is bad ... there *SHOULD* be
Running mktexlsr /var/lib/texmf ... done.
And looking into the code I see the somewhere the definition of
TEXMFSYSVARDIR
has gone lost, and thus mktexlsr runs in unprotected mode.
I will fix it, but probably *AFTER* the transition to testing.
