I can't believe how stupid people can get recently. That patch is a joke, changing the configure call is trivial.
Disabling xdvi, I can't grok it how ignorant people can be.

Bottom line: embedded code copies are bad, and old/out-dated libraries are bad.
If there remains a high demand for xdvi, someone can certainly take up the cause of converting it to use freetype.
