I did a new build one time on the modified, one time on the unmodified
source tree. I compared the build logs. The result is that mf and
xdvi are not explicitely(!) linked with "-lSM -lICE -lXext". However
one of the libs (it is linked with) seems to imply a link with one of
these libs.

--> not my fault.

I'll check in the patch.
