I have just submitted an update to CTAN (DANTE) that fixes this. It
is slightly different from the suggested code, but has the same
effect.

Thanks for pointing this out to me. There are so many millions of
combinations of options for custom-bib that it is not surprising that
some of them lead to inconsistencies.  It should not be, but that's
real life.

Anyway, version 4.32 should repair this little but unnecessary bug.

now as fixed in upstream.
