In my view Xetex without ‘fontspec’ is like a car without accelerator. I
cannot imagine one person that uses Xetex without ‘fontspec’. However if
you manage Xetex (resp. ‘xelatex’) working while using ‘fontspec’ even
if the Latin Modern fonts are not installed, that would also be great or
even better. For I still do not understand completely why ‘xelatex’ does
not compile a file that includes the ‘fontspec’ option but does not
demand the Latin Modern fonts.
