Bug#544028: texlive: tex very very slow on VIA processor: minutes to compile one-liners.

The problem occurs on a 1GHz VIA Esther processor. My other computer
does not have this problem.
After a standard install of texlive in Debian, 'tex' and 'pdftex' take
minutes to complete. Not just the first time. Every invocation of
'tex' takes minutes, even when the source-file contains only the
single command "\bye".
CPU is close to 100% during the operation.
'reportbug' says my architecture is "i386 (i686)", this may be part of
the problem. If my tex-binary has been compiled for 386, it would be
slower than neccessary. But even that wouldn't explain how tex can be
_so_ slow.
I would love to help track this down. I don't expect many people
use tex on this processor. Please contact me and point me towards
finding the cause of this problem.

output, please include a MINIMAL example input file that produces the
error in your report. Don't forget to also include minimal examples of
other files that are needed, e.g. bibtex databases. Often it also helps
to include the logfile. Please, never send included pictures!
If your example file isn't short or produces more than one page of
output (except when multiple pages are needed to show the problem),
