Package: texlive-base-bin
Version: 2007.dfsg.2-4
Severity: normal
File using package arial.sty runs through latex OK but xdvi is unable
to find the information it needs to build the font:
: nr@labrador 12355 ; xdvi 2008
kpathsea: Running mktexpk --mfmode / --bdpi 600 --mag 1+120/600 --dpi 720 arr8u
mktexpk: don't know how to create bitmap font for arr8u.
Searching for files related to arr8u yields only a tfm file:
: nr@labrador 12364 ; mlocate arr8u
/usr/share/texmf-texlive/fonts/tfm/monotype/helvetic/arr8u.tfm
I have package texlive-full installed, version 2007.dfsg.1-5.
This seems to me like a packaging issue, in that the arial.sty is
accepted by latex but the actual font cannot be rendered. Similar
errors occur when trying to render the font using dvips or pdflatex.
-- Package-specific info:
If you report an error when running one of the TeX-related binaries
(latex, pdftex, metafont,...), or if the bug is related to bad or wrong
output, please include a MINIMAL example input file that produces the
error in your report. Don't forget to also include minimal examples of
other files that are needed, e.g. bibtex databases. Often it also helps
to include the logfile. Please, never send included pictures!
If your example file isn't short or produces more than one page of
output (except when multiple pages are needed to show the problem),
you can probably minimize it further. Instructions on how to do that
can be found at

arial comes from the (TeX Live) package pclnfss, reading the README file
you could see that ...
/---------------------
| pclnfss - a package of LaTeX 2e class files for selecting and using
| the standard 45 scalable fonts built into most PCL laser printers.
| Updates the .../texmf/tex/latex/dvilj/*.sty package files provided
| with the original dviljk-2.x distribution.
\---------------------
If you want to use arial, you have to have a printer with this font
built in and use dviljk ...
Closing this bug.
PS: Arial is anyway a PITA, why don't you use Helvetica from URW? It is
the default and can be used easily
\fontfamily{uhv}\selectfont
or some package around it.
Best wishes
