I guess the removal of something can't be an important request,
unless the to be removed stuff causes licensing issues (or similar).
Simply don't use the old stuff! In #322713 we requested the TL team
to remove dvipdfm already, but they didn't dare to do so yet
(AFAICT, didn't check TL2008).
I found another old bug, which describes your problem sitting on
tetex-base (#428014). I merge it here.
