Upstream told me that it's quite common this way at least for french bibliographies. For italians he has heard of different opinions about it and he doesn't really care that much about it since it's not a technical decision. It just has to be cleared what's the way to go for italian style (which is difficult for him since he's not italian). At the moment I'm having problems with my sourceforge account.
