Sorry, I just found the problem when trying to
prepare that example. Was my own fault:

Somehow (maybe a problem of the emacs tex mode) a

\end{document}
\begin{document}

came into the text parts of my book sources, which I definitely did not
put in myself. Not that easy to find in 600 pages.  While the book was
still
generated and nothing was wrong with the dvi itself,
just that bibtex problem was the only visible problem,
and it came just with the recent upgrade of my debian machine.

Well, I said *anything*, not *everything*. ;-)
