many thanks for the "speed of light" reply, your suggestion works.
I checked /usr/share/doc/texlive-doc/latex/umlaute/umlaute.pdf and on page one
there are some migration paths lined out. UTF8 is not mentioned at all in the
whole document though....would it be worthwile to change that?
I put Axel Sommerfeld on copy, he authored the document.
