No idea what were the pros and cons I had in mind at that time. Probably
I was too lazy, and then I thought that it was only an
unstable->unstable thing and will not hit etch->lenny, but now that I
think about it could well be that we have to have some transition code.
But who will write that one ... since Florent seems (unfortunately) to
have some serious problems nowadays (hoping he really is doing well, I
am a bit nervous that I didn't hear from him for such a long time), you
are loaded with your work, and I am currently quite loaded with writing
the installer for upstream TeX Live together with Reinhard, I don't see
a high probability that this will be implemented soon.
Someone else wants to take it?

We can leave them hang around, but we certainly cannot write some code
to transfer the old formats as changed to ones for texlive, at least I
will and wont write this code, as it spans several texlive packages.
So either ignore this piuparts problem and tell them, well yes, that is
for the convenience of the sysadm, or just remove it.
Best wishes
