Could you be a bit more explicit, or even better, send a quilt patch to
the package?

I really don't understand what you are talking about! fixwrites for
example is a compiled binary (from .c code).  Same for splitup.

So if you want it fixed in Ubuntu, submit a patch here or as a bug
report to the Debian luatex packages. I will *DEFINITELY* not install an
ubuntu chroot on my system and start trying this.
