Maybe on and off, given the demands of various package dependencies
and upgrades, or upgrades that may have been incompatible with TeX.
I don't recall the specifics of when, or what.
The oldest '/var/log/dpkg.log' archive on my system is from 12/06,
looks like a 12 month limit. Even so 'dpkg' wasn't able to create log
files until 2005. Too bad, because a complete log from 1999 would have
the answers.
