Are you working on this? I just had a quick look at it: simply
copying the appropriate patch (30_libpoppler_0.5.9) from texlive-bin
does not work and the build against the new lib fails.

BTW: luatex has its own kpathsea instead of linking dynamically
against libkpathsea. FAD?
