But I have verified that this is not the cause of the problem: please see Ralf's

Indeed, the version of

/usr/local/share/texmf/tex/latex/xcolor/xcolor.sty

is

[2007/01/21 v2.11 LaTeX color extensions (UK)]

and is later than that of

/usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/xcolor/xcolor.sty

which is

[2005/12/21 v2.09 LaTeX color extensions (UK)]
