I am sorry to say that I cannot reproduce your problem on my etch
machine using Norbert's backports. Here is the output of running
'xelatex --output-driver="xdvipdfmx -v"' on your example file:

$ xelatex --output-driver="xdvipdfmx -v" orig.tex
This is XeTeXk, Version 3.141592-2.2-0.996-patch1 (Web2C 7.5.6)

How does the output look like on your machine?

BTW, ps2pdf is not a good tool for cenverting eps images to pdf, since
it does not honour the bounding box. a2ping and epstopdf are better in
this respect.
