Bug#448701: the luatex examples aren't working (luatex not working at all?)

I'm trying the attached a.tex example, the first shown on the luatex
website. Compiling it with "luatex -fmt pdflatex a.tex" fails as
follows:
$ luatex -fmt pdflatex a.tex
