I guess we can put this -doc splitting on the TODO list, but it will
need some severe reworking of the scripts, no idea when we can do this.

First on the list is AFAIS the hmtl/xml integration, Frank has done some
work on this.

I am feeding many things back into TeX Live upstream, since I am working
there, too. But splitting the collections is non-trivial, and you have
to have a good rationale WHY you want to do it. Just the size will not
do it, Karl will not agree.

I made a size list once, some packages were the doc part is much bigger
(relatively and absolutely) then the data part:
texlive-base-bin_2007-5_i386.deb
4.2M texmf-texlive
11M doc
texlive-humanities_2007-3_all.deb
1.5M texmf-texlive
11M doc
texlive-latex-base_2007-4_all.deb
7.7M texmf-texlive
37M doc
texlive-latex-extra_2007-3_all.deb
20M texmf-texlive
104M doc
texlive-latex-recommended_2007-4_all.deb
13M texmf-texlive
24M doc
texlive-metapost_2007-5_i386.deb
1.9M texmf-texlive
11M doc
texlive-pstricks_2007-3_all.deb
2.0M texmf-texlive
32M doc
texlive-publishers_2007-3_all.deb
6.0M texmf-texlive
16M doc
texlive-science_2007-3_all.deb
2.0M texmf-texlive
9.5M doc

So I guess splitting the -doc parts would make sense.

Maintainer status is not needed. I was myself long a alioth -guest and
worked on the stuff. If you want you can look a the perl scripts
generating the packages and make some patches to automatically split the
stuff. Send me the patches then.

Best wishes
