Right, it works with 3.3 to 4.0 (I'm not sure why, the fundamental
problem in gcc has been present forever, for example it also fails
with 2.95).

The problem would magically disappear if we pushed the minimum Alpha
CPU requirement to ev56, but this suggestion has met some opposition
last time it came up...
