Not "might", this needs a replace. But there are several of these ...
but maybe it is enough to texlive-science replaces texlive-latex-extra,
and texlive-humanities replaces texlive-latex-extra, because the
packages have been split out from texlive-latex-extra.

No. Impossible. As you said, we will end up everywhere with everything.

That could be an option, but also telling the reader:
apt-cache search siunits
will show you were it is.
