fyi, purging tetex-base and reinstalling it seemed to fix the problem.
my guess is tetex-base is behaving slightly differently and breaks with
some other non-dependency package on the system. fwiw, these are the
packages that were purged along with tetex-base:
docbook-utils* jadetex* latex-beamer* latex-ucs* latex2rtf* pgf* prosper*
rubber* tetex-base* tetex-bin* tetex-extra* tipa*
so a little trial and error ought to find the culprit :)
