Package: tetex-bin
Version: 1.0.6-7

When trying to generate a proof sheet for a font using \mode=smoke,
I get the error 'xdvi.bin: can't find font black; using cmr10 instead at 600 dpi.'
This is very similar to another bug in teTeX (reported as #39889).

Here is a transcript:
$ xdvi font.dvi
kpathsea: Running mktexpk --mfmode ljfour --bdpi 600 --mag 1+0/600 --dpi 600 black
mktexpk: Running mf \mode:=ljfour; mag:=1+0/600; nonstopmode; input black

mktexpk: `mf \mode:=ljfour; mag:=1+0/600; nonstopmode; input black' failed.
kpathsea: Appending font creation commands to missfont.log.
xdvi.bin: can't find font black; using cmr10 instead at 600 dpi.

As per the solution posted to the other bug (39889) by Thomas Esser,
I attempted a work around by creating a black.mf file which pointed to
a blackf file -- but no such file exists, so either the file nomenclature
is not consistant (grayf, blackf) or there simply is not a compatible
metafont file to replace black.mf.

At any rate, as with the gray font problem, the result is a preview
that isn't really of any use at all.

Again (?), please read Appendix H of The METAFONTbook for instructions
on creating gray and black fonts. It is impossible to create a
generic gray/black font which will work on all systems, and you have
to create your own, following the instructions and examples given
there. You could always configure xdvi to use the cx font, though.
