I am sorry to hear that you experienced issues during the upgrade.
Did you take the percussions mentioned in the release-notes[1]? Namely,
run the upgrade in a "screen" session or/and outside your X11 environment?

Note that you can pin the package, if you wish to ensure it is never
installed. The upgrade process may need to install packages as a part
of the upgrade, so it is not uncommon for a dist-upgrade to install new
packages.
