Do you have anything in /dev/snd/ ?
had the same issue, i resolved it by installing udev, not that i really
wanted it. This seems to be linked to 2.6.14 kernel. Reverting to my
previous 2.6.13, all issues are gone.

I run multiple sound cards, and now my issue is to make it respect the
index=0 option to specify in which order i want the cards on my system
to appear, still on 2.6.14.
