My point was: Choose the "simple" installation; add X and Gnome; under
these conditions gpm is installed.

If this is the default configuration for the Debian installation, it
should be integrated properly so that X will work "out of the box".

There are way to many "gotcha"s in the current installation for a novice.
(possibly even for an experienced idiot like myself ;-)

Well, lets make it work with serial first ;-)

I really like the gpm capabilities at the console (which is where I
normally live) but these capabilities are not integrated with X either.
It would be very nice to be able to cut text from the console, and then be
able to paste it into an xterm, for instance. (on the other hand, I can't
figure out how to cut an paste within X between or within a window, so
this may just be over my head ;-)
