IIRC it actually produces some particular mouse protocol, but same

It worked just fine when I tried it. The current behaviour is very
confusing - there's no hint that GPM is going to pass on data in any
format other than raw, so when you tell X what sort of mouse you have
you obviously tell it whatever the physical mouse is.
