The ppp failure I had after the hamm -> slink upgrade was not solid, but
failed after 8 of 10 reboots. I rebuild my 2.0.33 kernel, but this did
not fix the problem. I have now built a custom 2.2.1 kernel and have not
had any ppp failures after 3 reboots.

There were no messages in /var/log/ppp.log for any of the failures.

See the attached failure info from my syslog.
