Does the kernel's "make ARCH=sh headers_install" output not work for something? That's what I've been using...
(I admit I haven't built vanilla kmod in forever, most of my systems are static kernels and both busybox and toybox both have insmod in them. It's in my old linux from scratch test stack, which I've been been meaning to reestablish on a version newer than lfs-6.8... :)
