Bug#342137: openssh-server: Script on login never displays last window, other inconsistencies

Package: openssh-server
Version: 1:4.2p1-5
Severity: normal

When a command is passed to ssh that runs a script, or when the user's
shell is set to that script, X11 forwarding has strange behavior.

There are 4 example cases that will be described below. For these
examples the provided script is set as the demo user's login shell. The
effects are the same if the login shell is set to /bin/bash and the
script is passed as a command to be run to ssh. These examples are from
a machine running identical versions of Debian, but we have seen the
same behavior connecting from putty or cygwin, so we believe this must
be a server-side issue.

If there is any other information I can provide, I will be glad to do
so.

Case 1: A bash script that opens a number of xterms running some
specialized software we are developing.

Result: All but the last requested xterm appears as expected. The last
one silently fails to appear. This behavior does not depend on the
number of xterms requested; it always drops the last one.

###########################################
########## End output for case 2 ##########
###########################################

Case 3: Open an xterm and run "hello" in it.

#############################################
########## Begin script for case 3 ##########
#############################################

#! /bin/bash

xterm -title "First" -e hello &

###########################################
########## End script for case 3 ##########
###########################################

Result: Unfortunately, I cannot reproduce what happened before, which
was approximately 20 xterms opening across the screen and then closing.
This only occurred before I turned on debug logging. Now it acts the
same as case 2.

Case 4: Open an xterm and run "hello" in it, then sleep for one second.

#############################################
########## Begin script for case 4 ##########
#############################################

#! /bin/bash

xterm -title "First" -e hello &
sleep 1s

###########################################
########## End script for case 4 ##########
###########################################

Result: No xterm appears, and the shell hangs until you kill it.

Debug output:

#############################################
########## Begin output for case 4 ##########
