Bug#238699: Debian bug #238699: further info

Hi.
Some information regarding the Debian bug you reported ("ssh: latest sid version recompiled on woody breaks password authentication").

Firstly: your sshd_config has "PasswordAuthentication no" in it. (This is good: in order to authenticate via PAM on OpenSSH 3.7p1 and up, you need to use ChallengeResponseAuthentication, aka keyboard-interactive.)

The other thing that can cause this (although I don't think this is the cause in your case) is if you have MD5 passwords and your system crypt() does not understand them. In such a case, OpenSSH can be configured --with-md5-passwords.
