I hope, you got that mail, but I just got news :)

It seems, the motd is only not printed for root (with or without
pubkey authentication):

holbe@darkside:/home/holbe% ssh localhost -l root
Password:
Last login: Thu Mar 25 06:14:28 2004 from localhost
root@darkside:~# logout
Connection to localhost closed.
holbe@darkside:/home/holbe% ssh localhost
Password:
Linux darkside 2.4.25 #1 Sat Feb 28 04:16:07 CET 2004 i686 GNU/Linux

the exact distribution terms for each program are described in the

You have mail.

Last login: Thu Mar 25 06:15:13 2004 from localhost
...
holbe@darkside:/home/holbe%

Maybe this helps (to reproduce it).

I have not configured anything special for root, and
with earlier versions, motd was printed for root too.
Maybe it has something to do with things that arent
executed especially for root.
