The problem disappears when I invoke the client with -Y. Not that I can
appreciate the significance of that observation - but it sounds as if you
have a rather good idea about what the problem is about.
The p1-2 version hasn't hit my mirror yet - I will report immediately when
I can try it out (cf Colin Watson's mail).
