just tried that, purged gdm and reinstalled to get the default
config, did those 2 changes and when I try to connect to gdm
syslog spits out:

Jun 6 10:59:30 sparky gdm[16252]: deal_with_x_crashes: Running the
XKeepsCrashing script
Jun 6 10:59:30 sparky gdm[16252]: Failed to start X server several times
in a short time period; disabling display :0

I removed xserver-common which provides /usr/X11R6/bin/X

restarted gdm and when I try to connect syslog spits out:
Jun 6 11:01:20 sparky gdm[16315]: gdm_server_spawn: Xserver not found:
/usr/bin/X11/X
Jun 6 11:01:20 sparky gdm[16317]: gdm_server_spawn: Xserver not found:
/usr/bin/X11/X
Jun 6 11:01:23 sparky gdm[16319]: gdm_server_spawn: Xserver not found:
/usr/bin/X11/X
Jun 6 11:01:26 sparky gdm[16321]: gdm_server_spawn: Xserver not found:
/usr/bin/X11/X
Jun 6 11:01:26 sparky gdm[16312]: deal_with_x_crashes: Running the
XKeepsCrashing script
Jun 6 11:01:26 sparky gdm[16312]: Failed to start X server several times
in a short time period; disabling display :0

*sigh*

thanks for the quick reply
