This kind of silent-pause is problematic as it breaks the assumptions
clients have about the snapshot mirrors being updated every ~6 hours.
Due to the auto-redirect logic of the last available snapshot, this can
remain unnoticed for weeks, despite updating the snapshot date in the
repository url.

Fully agree, why not simply change the DNS entry to point to that
domain, or setup a redirect to that mirror via HTTP 301?
But even then, the damage already happened as the snapshot will
silently jump forward, breaking reproducible builds that assumed to
have a snapshot date in the range of June-today.
