Yes, it's wide characters and very much slower.

Hmm. Sounds like either openjade's problem or docbook-stylesheets
(probably the latter).  Can you file a bug against the latter?  If
possible, please give the complete openjade cmdline and link to where
I can get SGML or XML sources.

Ah, no, please do so. See my last email.  I will not bother uploading
sgmltools-2 bugfix -- just kill it.
