But why? There is a *stable* release with security support. Debian isn't
made for skipping a whole release. And the end of support for etch was
announced long ago, so that everyone had enough time to switch to lenny,
and not 2 days before breakeven.

Don't get me wrong, Jens, I'm not complaining. I'm just suggesting something that would be useful for me (and probably some other people).

And concerning the why: Upgrading a large amount of computers is a lot of work, regardless of how easy it might be on a single PC. There are always incompatibilities, configurations to be changed, user-installed applications ceasing to work, etc. Frankly, I'd like to avoid that work as much as possible, that's why I'd profit from longer support times.
