I just downloaded through apdet-notifier and the installation went wrong.
Then I tried to remove the broken package and install by hand, but it
failed
It looks like, at some point in the past, you deleted /etc/init.d/samba.
This is preventing samba's postinstall script from working, because it
expects to be able to call it.
If you reinstall samba_3.0.24-6etch5_i386.deb using "dpkg -i
--force-confmiss" the file should be recreated. Note that this will
recreate any other conffiles that you might have deleted.
