I'd suggest that it might have something to do with the fact that you
are looking for Potato, which, well, is ancient. That was before what is
now old-stable, aka Woody, and is no longer officially supported (and
hasn't been since a year after the launch of Woody back in the early
days of this millennium.) My guess is that the disk space was needed for
something else - eg. currently supported distributions, so that those
files that have lingered unchanged for years have likely been deleted.
