I do it routinely with freeswan userspace and 2.4.26 with no patch (using
the backport of 2.6.x IPSec to 2.4.x which is included in Debian kernel
sources and binaries). I did not try with isakmpd, since I have a working
freeswan configuration.

I use sid on my laptop and woody on the desktop I connect to, with
the freeswan package recompiled for woody.
