    If I remember correctly mc in has something to do with multicast
addresses, it might be to disable forwarding of mc addressed packets.  On my
system 2.4.4 it's already set to 0.
    To enable it or even write to it I believe you have to compile the
kernel with a CONFIG_MROUTE flag set somewhere.

If the values on your box are set to 0... let them be.  Unless you are
running a routed daemon and need to route mc addressed frames.

Sorry for the smarmy repsonse, but the answer to the second question
is "at least not until you are able to answer the first question".

Too bad I can't help you answer the first question without doing some
reading myself... we'll see if somebody beats me to it.
