thanks for your input. I have done as you suggested: After verifying
that the tags since 5.0.0 (combined with pristine-tar) match what is
available via debsnap, I gbp-import-dsc'd all releases between
5.5.0+dfsg-1 and 5.9.8+dfsg-1  and applied my local patches.

Branches upstream, debian/master, and pristine-tar as well as tags have
been pushed to Salsa; the original debian/master there has been
preserved as debian/master-orig.

If anyone wants to check that I have not made things worse, go for it.
At some point, I think that we should get rid of the old branches
(debian/expeimental, debian/master-orig, master, meson, and probably
pristine-lfs.)
