While the current MUA concept in reportbug is limited, I don't want to break the parts that are actually working. This stuff needs to keep working even in text-only environments, so xdg support can only be added as a new option. That's also why I think there is value in a custom mua option outside xdg. I agree that adding an xdg-email option as a first step is likely to cover the most common case and will be a huge improvement already. Custom mua support can be the next step.
