Hi,
(disclaimer: I'm not part of the release team.)

Thanks for the pointer.
So:
480 files changed, 30041 insertions(+), 5206 deletions(-)
It's unlikely someone will review this so the release team will have
to decide based on other reasons.

OK. It certainly means nobody suffered / cared enough to report these
bugs, which I find a bit surprising given 7.8.352 has been in testing
and sid since mid-2010, and in Squeeze since it's out. But indeed the
popcon is pretty low, so perhaps it just means that almost nobody is
actually using it.
As a summary, it looks like the hard choice to make is between:
A. Shipping a version (7.8.352) that the Debian maintainer and
upstream tell us is buggy, but apparently no Debian user cared
enough to report bugs since years.
B. Shipping a version (7.8.700) that apparently fixes some bugs, but
never spent any time in sid yet, so we have little visibility
about potential regressions.
C. Not shipping pike7.8 in Wheezy.
I'm very much in doubt what the best course of action for Wheezy is,
but I'm a bit tempted to recommend C based on the information I have.
Cheers,
