i've recently been seeing this with ldm as well:
http://packages.qa.debian.org/l/ldm.html
http://packages.debian.org/source/unstable/ldm
reports 2:2.0.6-4 for unstable. although most architectures, except hurd-i386,
have version 2:2.0.48-1 in testing and unstable.
seems gsynaptics is also very outdated on hurd-i386, so my guess is that has
something to do with it.
