Bug#206363: packages.qa.debian.org: Would it be possible to show the translation status as well?

Package: qa.debian.org
Version: unavailable; reported 2003-08-20
Severity: wishlist

Hello,

I was wondering if it would be possible to add a new box to the package
status page about the status of translations in that package.

All the needed infos are already extracted from the packages by a cron
script to generate w.d.o/intl/l10n, there is "only" need to parse the
result of this and display it on the appropriate page.

The daily-updated database of all relevant informations can be
downloaded from:
http://ftp-master.debian.org/~barbier/l10n/material/data/unstable.gz
and
http://non-us.debian.org/~barbier/l10n/material/data/unstable.gz

The syntax of this file is rather simple and close to the classical dpkg
status format. We already have tools to parse it, but it is in perl :)
Beyong the classical dpkg status fields, there is a few more:
MENU, MAN, DEBCONF, PODEBCONF and PO.

menu and man, are kind of experimental for now (and should be ignored).
The important fields for now are DEBCONF, PODEBCONF and PO. These
fields introduce a list of lists. Lets take an example.

Package: aegis
Version: 4.11-2
Section: devel
Priority: optional
Maintainer: Chris G. Davis <cd@debian.org>
PoolDir: main/a/aegis
Type: ?
Upstream: other
PO:
 lib/de/LC_MESSAGES/aegis.po!de!622t0f0u!lib/de/LC_MESSAGES/aegis_4.11-2_aegis.po
 lib/en/LC_MESSAGES/aegis.po!en!622t0f0u!lib/en/LC_MESSAGES/aegis_4.11-2_aegis.po
 lib/es/LC_MESSAGES/aegis.po!es!622t0f0u!lib/es/LC_MESSAGES/aegis_4.11-2_aegis.po
 lib/fr/LC_MESSAGES/aegis.po!fr!622t0f0u!lib/fr/LC_MESSAGES/aegis_4.11-2_aegis.po
 lib/nl/LC_MESSAGES/aegis.po!nl!622t0f0u!lib/nl/LC_MESSAGES/aegis_4.11-2_aegis.po
 lib/ro/LC_MESSAGES/aegis.po!ro!622t0f0u!lib/ro/LC_MESSAGES/aegis_4.11-2_aegis.po
 lib/ru/LC_MESSAGES/aegis.po!ru!622t0f0u!lib/ru/LC_MESSAGES/aegis_4.11-2_aegis.po
 po/aegis.pot!_!!po/aegis_4.11-2_aegis.pot
PODEBCONF:
 templates.pot!_!!debian/po/aegis_4.11-2_templates.pot
 debian/aegis.templates!_!!aegis_4.11-2_debian_aegis.templates
 debian/po/pt_BR.po!pt_BR!6t0f0u!debian/po/aegis_4.11-2_pt_BR.po

It means that the version 4.11-2 of aegis (currently in unstable)
contains both po files (to translate the program itself) and po debconf
files (to translate the installation process). The main difference with
the DDTP is that we speak here of what is currently in the package, not
of what is laying on an external server unavailable to users until
integrated by the DD.

More precisely, this package is translated in the languages de, en, es,
fr, nl, ro and ru. The field after listing the language gives the
current status of this translation. Here, 622 translated strings, no
fuzzy strings (needing to be reviewed by the translation maintainer)
neither any untranslated string. Quite impressive indeed :)

The listed pot file is the template to download in order to start a new
translation and the templates file is the one which were used to
generate the pot file in case of templates. Both should be ignored for
now.

How to display it on the pages is left as exercice to the reader :)
What about a box on the right displaying:

Average translation
 100% (po: 100%; debconf: 100%)
Details for each languages
 fr: 99% (po: 100%; debconf:0%)
 ...

(the first item only containing the freshness of included translation,
explaining that french has only 99% when the overall is 100%)

You could add a TODO item to all packages using the old DEBCONF system,
since it is deprecated by po-debconf, according to Joey Hess.

Of course I am willing to help and do my part of the job if I'm
directed to the right parts of the source.

It would be easy to extract the name of the last translator of each po
file, and thus allow the creation of a "translator.php" such as the
"developer.php", but I guess it's a bit too early to dream about that.

Likewise, we have leads to find the translation project in charge of
each package, to redirect contributors to the right address. But one
step after another...

The question is wheather you accept to add such informations to the
pts or if we have to redevelop from the scratch such a system for the
translation issues.

Thanks for your time, Mt.
