I got this working by changing line 909 of the file "librio500.c"
in the
"librio500" subfolder of the rio500-0.8.1 command line utilities
to read "cmd.timeout = 250;" instead of "cmd.timeout = 50;" 

Setting this timeout and recompiling fixes the problem of the rio500 utils
not working under 2.6.7.
