Bug#483205: hplip: device manager not communicating with printer

After some upgrades to Debian unstable (including python?), I can no 
longer use the device manager called from hp-systray to get information 
from the printer, and just get this error message, but no dbus error 
messages:

error: Unable to communicate with device (code=12): 
hp:/usb/Officejet_Pro_K5300?serial=MY742380S7
warning: Device not found
